You know that thing your parents did that drove you crazy? Telling you not to make that face because it would freeze like that, or staying up until the wee hours to wait for you to come home, or insisting on packing the strangest food in your lunchbox. Well, it may just be that as you've had your own kids, you've caught yourself doing some of these things you swore up and down that you would never, ever repeat. Welcome to the lovely circle of parenting. We asked our Sweat Life parents, and parents all over the health and wellness community, if they have ever caught themselves in a situation just such as this. Following are the responses:
“The only thing I really kept that I can think of is gargling with really hot, really salty water when I get a sore throat. Or hydrogen peroxide. My mom wasn't really into the natural stuff for the most part!”
"I always want my kids to be in the clean plate club, which isn't always the healthiest way to eat!"
- Cynthia Rowley, Cynthia Rowley Fashion
"Whenever I had trouble falling asleep, my Mother would tell me to start with my toes and very slowly work my way up my body by telling each body part to relax and go to sleep. Toes, ball of the foot, arches, heels...not missing one little spot. I don't ever remember getting up past my knees! I now have my children use this technique, and sometimes I talk them through it."
- Wendy Wolfson, Instructor at FlyWheel
"Growing up in San Francisco, not too far from Haight Ashbury, my hippie mother was all about her herbal tonics, tinctures, and extracts. The stinkier the better, as far as she was concerned. As a kid, nobody’s looking to stand out too much, and I certainly wasn’t thrilled to have jars full of murky lake water where my friends had Gushers. But upon moving into my new home a couple of weeks ago, I found myself struggling for shelf space. It seems a significant chunk of real estate was being occupied by jars of fermenting produce, smelling all kinds of pungent-funky. Without fully realizing it, I had become my mother. Fortunately, I checked the living room, and found no sign of healing crystals."
"Every day I find myself saying to my kids and my husband ‘If only you did XYZ, then I wouldn’t have to ask you to do it!’ I hear my mother in my voice, and cringe, as every day I would come home from school and leave my lunchbox in my schoolbag — and every day without fail my mum would ask me for the box and she would say ‘Could you just bring me the lunchbox, then I wouldn’t have to ask…’ Every. Day. I also thought I would never give in and let my kids eat sweets just to silence them on the train - and now I do EXACTLY that."
"Defnitely the spacing of our children - I was/am 5 and 6 years older than my sisters, who were 13 months apart — and I am having my kids close in age to give them the close relationship I hope they are able to have."
