Keoni Hudoba is nothing if not a nice guy. He is always happy and friendly, and starts and ends his correspondence with “Aloha” and “Mahalo.” But he is also a kickass trainer, responsible for creating the Cyc Fitness indoor spin class workout. He is sponsored by Under Armour, and most recently, he became an on-air trainer for the Radius Fitness channel, aired by the NBC networks. We think it’s safe to say that Keoni’s career is on fire! Keoni tells us how he became one of NYC’s most in-demand trainers, his guilty pleasure, and why he makes sure his own health is on track in order to best serve his clients.
How did you first get interested in fitness?
Fitness saved my life, literally. I hit rock bottom weighing in at 300+ pounds, and knew I had to change my life. I was at an opera audition, and the director asked me to stay for the movement call after I sang. I thought to myself "Movement!?" — I don't move. That was the day I had my “a-ha moment,” and knew from that day forward I needed to make a change, and I did. It took me three years to shed the fat, and over that time I found my second passion, which was fitness.
When you first started this journey in fitness, what were your goals?
My goal to this day is to guide any athlete looking to live a healthier lifestyle to reach their full potential.
You created the workout for Cyc Fitness, now one of the biggest national indoor cycling studios. What makes the Cyc workout a unique spin class?
The Cyc Method is a 45-minute interactive show, in a state-of-the-art studio, led by our instructors that we call Cycologists. Over 20 different weighted, sports-specific moves are combined with endurance rounds, targeted on working the whole body, the whole time. It is a social experience for all shapes and sizes of athletes. Come ready to sweat and be entertained!
As indoor spinning has become so competitive, how has Cyc been able to push to the front of the pack in such a crazy fitness marketplace?
I honestly feel like there is room for everyone in the fitness space. The method speaks for itself. The amount of transformation stories we have come across over the past three years is truly inspiring. I am always looking at ways we can evolve the method and constantly challenge our athletes.
And from there, you became sponsored by Under Armour. How did that happen?
A few execs from the Under Armour Womens team came to one of my classes and within two weeks there was a contract on my lawyer’s desk, and the next thing I know I was sponsored and training professional athletes. IT IS A DREAM!
What has being part of the Under Armour family brought to you?
Being one of a handful of Under Armour trainers — I believe there are 6 of us — it is an absolute honor to represent the best. I think we have brought each other the perfect partnership. I am a true believer in everything happening organically, partnership-wise. Under Armour happened organically, Vitafusion happened organically, and so did NBC Radius Fitness. Of course, I have worked my ass off, and will continue to do so.
Yes! you are now an on-air trainer for Radius Fitness, NBC's on-demand fitness channel. Where can we find Radius, and what can people expect?
It's a first-of-its-kind, multi-platform, fitness and wellness program. I lead interactive fitness videos on Radius’ digital platforms, which also telecast on NBCSN, focusing on high intensity, advanced workouts — including VENOM for Radius, Washboard Abs, Double Time, and most recently, the VOLCANIC series. Check out RadiusFitness.com to see for yourself!
I think it's safe to say your career is ON FIRE. You have a national workout, a top fitness apparel brand, and NBC all on your side. What's next?
SKY IS THE LIMIT! I feel that this is only the beginning of my career, I have so much more to create, and so much more to give. I would love to write a book, do destination health retreats, more motivational speaking, and keep spreading the healthy love.
With so many things on your plate, and your focus on helping everyone else stay healthy, how do you make time to keep yourself strong and healthy?
My body is my business card, and with only one during my lifetime, I will most definitely take care of it. Proper fuel, rest, and working out is the name of my game. And, of course, have fun and enjoy life.
Any other advice for our readers, or final words?
The best advice is to allow yourself rewards. If sweets are your guilty pleasure — they are mine — then allow yourself that reward. You earned it!
