I run a health company called GreenBlender. We ship to thousands of people, all the pre-portioned ingredients and superfoods to make amazing smoothies at home. GreenBlender lives and breathes the mantra that maintaining a healthy lifestyle should be fun and easy.
I started the company with my boyfriend, Amir Cohen, because we found that when people (including ourselves) decide to make a health change two things happen:
1. We get immediately overwhelmed with choices
(i.e., should I go Paleo, do I cut out all grain/dairy, what about quinoa, etc.)
2. We start moving towards extremes
(i.e., I have to go raw vegan tomorrow, I can't have ice cream ever)
This diet path can get overwhelming, lead to deprivation, and may not see long-lasting results. Living a healthy lifestyle starts with building healthy habits and not extreme dieting. GreenBlender is all about setting our members up for long-term success by helping them start their day with a healthy decision. It’s that simple.
5 ways to let it go and start having fun with your health
1. Let go of the results and start small
No matter where you are on your health path, focus on one small change you can implement right now. For me, it was to incorporate 1 healthy smoothie into my morning routine, for you it might be taking the stairs instead of the elevator or getting off a stop earlier and walking the rest of the way to work. Whatever it is, focus on one healthy change you can integrate today and build from there.
2. Let go of changing everything at once and work it into your daily routine
This goes hand-in-hand with number one. Take a look at your current routine and see where you can incorporate healthier activities. I started meditating for 10 minutes on the train on my way to work, and run/commute home once a week. Look at what you’re doing now and identify areas you can add an extra health boost.
3. Let go of the status quo and figure out what YOU love
Don’t get stuck in a food or exercise rut. It’s easy to slip into a mundane mindset and give up on your health and fitness journey purely out of boredom. Try this: Go to your local Farmers Market and pick one item you have never tried. Ever heard of a manderquat? There is not a one-size-fits-all activity or food that will lead you to a healthy life. There is no one way to get healthy. Figure out what you love and do that.
4. Let go of perfection and don’t sweat the small stuff
We can often be hard on ourselves. Sometimes, your morning is better spent catching up on zzz’s than powering through one more workout. It’s important to remember that this is a journey. If you truly are burnt out and that workout is causing you nothing but dread, honor that. Don’t beat yourself up over that piece of pizza or missed workout.
5. Let go of your mental lists and write down your goals
A study conducted by Dr. Gail Matthews, a psychology professor at Dominican University in California, found that people who write down their goals are 42 percent more likely to achieve them than people who don’t. Do this tonight: Take a few minutes and think about what you want to accomplish tomorrow. Then, write it down! You’ll be amazed at how quickly you can check off the list.
