Louisa Stelle is assistant to one of the most famous women in both publishing AND fashion: Anna Wintour, the Editor-in-Chief of Vogue magazine. In addition to her around-the-clock job, Louisa also loves being active and is quite wellness conscious, as an avid fan of yoga, acupuncture, and Pilates. So the challenge: How does she balance a healthy lifestyle when living completely on someone else’s schedule?
Ten tips to maintaining your health (and sanity) in a high-stress job:
Setting a routine helps you achieve stability in an otherwise unbalanced scheduled. For me this means early morning exercise and ten minutes of reading before bed. Find what works for you!
We’ve all heard it before, but when things get a little crazy, taking time to slow down really helps put whatever is going on back into perspective. The best meditation practice is one that works for you – sitting up, lying down, five minutes or twenty minutes, it doesn’t matter what it entails as long as it benefits you!
3. Meal Prep
Wholesome, homemade meals will give you the energy you need to make it through the day and keep your wellness goals on track. Prep vegetables, grains, proteins, and dressings on Sunday to use through the week – my favorite lunch right now is spiralized zucchini in an avocado basil sauce topped with pine nuts. It takes ten minutes to put together and is tastier and healthier than anything the café at work offers.
Long, busy days are taxing both physically and mentally - make sure to set aside enough time to properly sleep and recover each night. Trust me, feeling rested makes handling stress much easier!
Humans were not made to sit at desk chairs for such long stretches of time! Walk to work, use the stairs, do whatever it takes to move more, sit less, and get some fresh air.
Make a to-do list, both personal and professional. Writing things out helps you visualize all you need to accomplish and ensures you avoid constantly thinking about what you haven’t done!
Keep a refillable water bottle at your office, it saves money, the environment, and will ensure that you remember to drink the water you need!
We are all capable of choosing our own thoughts, make yours positive ones. Find small ways to brighten your own day — take a bath, apply a face mask, go out to dinner, or just allow yourself to sit on the couch and be idle. Make everyday special!
9. Check out
When you get the chance to relax, let yourself. I learned the hard way by overbooking myself during time off — sometimes doing less really is more.
10. Let go
Give yourself a break, let go, and laugh. Take time to see friends and family and take your mind off work. A fulfilling career is important, but don’t forget feeling connected to others and having fun is just as vital to maintaining a happy life.
