Quit my job? And start fresh? That is a SCARY thing, and yes, I actually did it! Here is the story of my journey in taking the plunge.
There comes a point in every person’s life when they start to question where they are at in life, and where they need to be going. For me, the question was: Is my career in public relations growing in the right direction? At the age I am today, do I feel my position can really set me up for the next twenty years of my life and beyond?
These are some BIG questions that I really needed to consider. Yes, I loved the experiences I had working with my past agencies and was truly grateful to have worked beside such amazing mentors, but I realized this position wasn’t fulfilling me the way it did when I first started my career. I couldn’t see myself in this position twenty years from now. A change was needed, and I felt it. And when I have an itch to do something, I’m the kind of person who takes action and doesn’t waste time overthinking it.
I’ve always been very strong-willed and determined, but my ability to make such quick life changes really comes from having such a clear and rational mindset. I am a strong believer in the idea that “a healthy body is a healthy mind,” and particularly over the last few years my strong fitness regime has really incited a life of focus and positivity.
Since I was 14 years old, I’ve been running track and lifting weights. Heck, fitness is in my DNA. Growing up, my father was always inclined to keep in shape in order to keep up with being a New York City fireman, and had been an avid gym buff since his teenage years. As I grew into my 20s, I really started to explore the fitness world, and I fell in love with the ability to push my body to new extremes. I had personal trainers, took the hottest fitness classes, ran my first New York City Half Marathon — but nothing has motivated me as much as CrossFit.
Any bad days I am having, or any un-motivating feelings are completely washed away when I walk into the box (CrossFit lingo for the “gym”). CrossFit incorporates functional movements that are constantly varied at high intensity, so there is no opportunity for slacking, and because of the quick bursts of movement, CrossFit challenges me to use 110% of my energy. Yes, it is true what you heard, CrossFit can be very cliquey, but let’s set one thing straight here — it’s because of a good thing! You are working out with the same people each and every day, you become friends with these people, and sometimes if you’re lucky, you become like a family. You challenge each other, you support each other, and you’re there for each other during the worst of days. There’s no competition amongst each other. It doesn’t matter that you aren’t lifting as heavy as the person next to you, because the goal is always about ‘being better then you were yesterday.’ I am challenging my own body, and building its strength to be a little better each day.
Challenging my body on a daily basis also increases my mental strength outside the box. I am not just trying to be better than I was yesterday physically, but as an individual. Learning to let go of life’s challenges, and use it as way to propel myself into a positive direction is one of the greatest lessons I’ve learned.
Today, my healthy regime continues to keep me focused on the ways I can improve my career and myself — first and foremost, by realizing I needed to quit my job to start something of my own. I am leaving behind the fear and just focusing on the positive that the future will hold, which includes the launch of my own public relations agency, JMG Public Relations. I will still continue to do what I LOVE to do most, and that’s working with wellness and lifestyle experts. It’s fun to work with people on their own personal brands, because you become a part of the dream-making process.
The leap is scary, and it’s new, but it’s all for me — and there’s really nothing more rewarding than that.
As a creative soul with the sheer desire to be constantly in the know, Jenna Guarneri was fascinated by the allure New York City had to offer. Being a native New Yorker in the heart of the media world, Jenna worked non-stop to break into the PR industry that so perfectly united her talents. After graduating from Baruch College in Manhattan, Jenna was immediately hired by a luxury public relations firm just two weeks after receiving her diploma. Having worked on top-named accounts in the industry, Jenna transitioned over to a boutique firm to specialize in personal public relations for the lifestyle and entertainment industries. It was here that Jenna found her true calling.
“I love helping my clients design a pathway to their dreams. It is a beautiful thing to watch their careers blossom, and to be a part of the ride is an experience I am eternally grateful for.” Having an a-ha moment in 2015, Jenna launched JMG Public Relations in New York City, a full-service agency specializing in the lifestyle and entertainment industries.
