Planning ahead and bringing a snack with you, when you’re out and about in the city or traveling abroad, is a necessity. I always tell my patients that a key element to successful eating is being prepared for the unknown. Being stuck on the subway, in a taxi, or with a delay at the airport could be a recipe for an eating disaster. (Although if you are hungry, the best option is always to eat something!)
Here are some of my favorite snacks that are portable and super tasty, and will keep you from heading to the dreaded vending machine:
Justin's Classic Peanut Butter 1.15 oz squeeze pack
This single-serve pack is a perfect pairing with an apple, banana, or celery, post-workout. Another bonus — both the classic peanut butter and classic almond butter squeeze packs have no added sugar! I personally prefer peanut butter, but have heard that the almond butter is their #1 seller.
Purely Elizabeth Original Ancient Grain Granola 2 oz bag
With ancient grains and lots of yummy seeds, this not-super-sweet granola is not only very crunchy, but also gluten-free and GMO-free. Most granolas are sugar-bombs and have too many calories for a super small serving size. This pre-portioned pack, with only 6g grams of sugar and 130 calories, takes the guesswork out of having to measure granola from a big package. What a perfect pairing with some plain yogurt for a quick travel snack (or one of my favorite travel-day options for breakfast).
Chili & Garlic Oloves 1.1 oz pack
Olives in a snack-size container?! Yes! This is a great savory, on-the-run snack paired with a string cheese or a handful of nuts. Besides the spicy chili and garlic, other creative flavors include lemon & rosemary, basil & garlic, and chili & oregano. I was thrilled when I heard that these creative and tasty portable poppers are now sold on JetBlue Airways and found in 14 countries.
Krave Basil Citrus Turkey Jerky
For a major protein boost, I always suggest some turkey jerky. Krave’s brand of jerky is one of my favorite choices since it is lower in sodium than most brands, and also leaves out any nitrates and artificial flavors. They also use lean cuts of turkey, beef, and pork, and have some really unique flavor choices like chili lime beef and black cherry bbq pork. All of the jerkies are super filling, satisfying, and yummy to boot.
Enlightened Sea Salt Roasted Broad Beans
Move over almonds ... snacking on broad beans is SO in. These “good-for-you crisps” impart a roasted, nutty, subtly salty flavor that’s savory and delicious. And the 1 oz. bags are easy to pack in your purse for a quick protein boost. Although they have really unique flavors like sriracha and mesquite bbq, I am a purist and appreciate the simplicity of the sea salt pack.
