At Sakara, we believe that health and well-being are dependent on several factors: nutrition, relationships, career, and love for the self. We promote balance in all areas of life, and use food as the medicine that fuels us.
Sakara was founded on the idea that true health means you’re making the right choices for your body because you want to, not because you have to. Once you get started on this path, everything else falls into place. We don’t count calories, points, carbs, or pounds. We’re not vegetarians, vegans, raw foodies, or extremists in any way. We believe in simplicity: local foods, whole ingredients, and loving hands! Every meal is delivered straight to your door, ready to eat.
We grew up in Sedona, which is a spiritual, hippie, BEAUTIFUL town in Arizona. Eating whole, nutritious foods straight from the earth was always a part of our lifestyle growing up. We learned the importance of meditation, spending time in nature, and eating healing foods prepared by loving hands very early on. It was when we moved to NYC that we lost touch with our food and our bodies. We relied on things like mixed nuts, bars, and Ezekial bread with almond butter to get us through our hectic days, because they’re good for you, right? All of these foods are great and super nutrient-rich, don’t get us wrong — but they are missing all the hydrating, fueling, healing life energy that plants flood your body with! The result of this diet was that we both felt awful in our bodies in distinct ways. Whitney was struggling to maintain her weight and battling cystic acne, while Danielle was struggling with her image of her body, turning both her body and her food into the enemy.
Sakara was the answer to this problem. Fueling our bodies with rich, hydrating super-foods, that reminded us how important it is to nourish ourselves from the inside out, allowed us to finally find that connection we had been seeking. But once we finally found a food system that worked, we realized how impossible it was to sustain in NYC! It’s hard to find high-quality produce that we know we can trust, then lugging it up 6 floors of stairs into a closet-sized kitchen just to cook for one person – it wasn’t feasible. We knew if we were having this problem, there were thousands of other people experiencing the same thing. We want to feed those people, and remind them what it feels like to feel GOOD in their bodies, so that they can truly live their dream lives.
This journey is what helped us create the program that has already changed the bodies – and lives — of thousands of people in NYC today. As we continue to grow, our mission of helping people feel good in their bodies again continues to fuel us. We want people to recognize how happy they deserve to feel and how sexy they truly are! We’re opening up in LA in June and nationwide shortly after. We’re also opening up what we’re offering, both in respects to e-commerce products and meal delivery programs. More Sakara — changing, revolutionizing, and loving more bodies in more places.
Most importantly, we have some principles that help us design Sakara’s foods that make you feel so great — healthy and beautiful. Below are the Sakara Life pillars of nutrition:
SAKARA NUTRITION PILLARS:
Eating your water is the secret behind a youthful, dewy glow. Water helps flush out toxins, while hydrating fruits and vegetables help hydrate the cells and leave our insides, as well as our skin and hair, clean and glowing.
Want to know what’s better than drinking a green juice everyday? Eating your greens! The key is to eat a minimum of 1-3 cups of greens with every Lunch & Dinner meal. This doesn’t mean you’re only eating salads (though if you’re new to eating greens, it may feel like it!). Instead, you’re eating your meal AND greens.
WE LOVE FAT! In fact, naturally healthy fats are a Sakara power ingredient that we use in all of our recipes. They are key to keeping you energized, lean, and radiant.
Eat the Rainbow
We believe that food should be bright, vibrant, and beautiful! The greater the color, the higher the nutrient content. The more colors you eat, the more of an array of nutrients you’re getting (hello plant protein).
At Sakara Life we get our protein intake from whole foods that are plant-based. Yes, that’s possible! Did you know that 50 percent of calories in green vegetables are actually derived from protein? And that four cups of kale packs in 12 grams of protein? Yep.
Essential nutrients are those that we need that our body cannot make. At Sakara Life, we strive to eat foods high in these essential nutrients to give our body the fuel it needs to function at its best.
Sulfur is one of the most abundant minerals in the body. Foods rich in sulfur (like kale, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, and cabbage) help the body fight off bacteria, toxins, and help maintain the skin’s elasticity. Mmmm veggies!
No Calorie Counting
A calorie is a unit used to measure energy, not nutrition. Calories are NOT created equal and are not a metric used for how fresh or healthy your food is. Rather than focusing on calories, we want to help you focus on how your clothes fit and how you feel! Isn’t that exciting? It’s an opportunity to listen to your body.
Your body is very smart and can tell you a lot. Eating this way helps create a body you can listen to, which allows you to have love for the body you live in. Let go of the mind chatter, tune in, and hear what your body is telling you.
Most of all, let us do the work, and enjoy what you eat — hydrating, plant-based, nutrient-filled fresh colorful foods, delivered right to your door.
Whitney Tingle and Danielle DuBoise are the founders of Sakara Life.
Danielle's expertise in holistic nutrition, chemistry, and anthropology equipped her with the tools necessary to think outside the box when it came to food and well-being. As a former model and actress, Danielle's experience with body image, roller coaster diets, and mind-body disconnection inspired her to create a food system that empowered her to make loving, healthy choices for herself, as a lifestyle, not a diet. After carefully crafting a meal program that finally worked for her, she was ready to share her secrets with the world and make the Sakara Life food program available for delivery (only on East Coast for now, but nationwide soon!). Danielle is a certified holistic health coach, advocate, and curator for the wellness and entrepreneurial world. She believes that food should make you feel sexy!
Whitney was working on Wall Street when she realized her true passion was to share her love of health with the financiers who desperately needed her help. She knows what it takes to fight for health in a stressful environment. She had gained 15 pounds working in the corporate office, and was struggling with cystic acne. She had seen every dermatologist in the city, and tried everything from antibiotics, to birth control pills, to acupuncture, acid peels, lights, and lasers. And when her dermatologist suggested that she do a second round of Accutane, she decided there had to be a better way. She turned to her best friend, Danielle, to partner and create a meal plan that allowed her to drop the weight and clear her skin while maintaining her busy lifestyle. As if that wasn’t enough, she also decided to find her Zen while she studied to become a certified yoga instructor. Go ahead, ask her for a stock tip while you’re in downward dog...
