By Chloe Epstein
The creation of Chloe's Soft Serve Fruit was inspired by my intense sweet tooth and commitment to a healthy lifestyle. I was forever searching for something that could satiate that frozen treat craving without all the artificial stuff.
As a long time fro-yo addict, when I became pregnant I started thinking more profoundly about the quality of the foods I was feeding myself and my future children — I longed for something delicious yet clean. With my partner, Michael Sloan, an avid triathlete with a freezer full of over-ripened bananas, we created Soft Serve Fruit using only fruit, water, and a touch of organic cane sugar.
Our first varieties were banana, mango, apple, and strawberry. In developing Soft Serve Fruit, we learned that we needed to dilute the fruit with water. When the fruit is diluted, the sugar level drops — and in order to keep the fruit from freezing in the machine, we needed to keep the sugar at a certain level. Enter our 3rd ingredient: a touch of cane sugar. (Fun fact: The sugar acts as an anti-freeze and is not added for flavor!)
The premise from the start was to use as few ingredients as possible, and never add stabilizers or anything artificial. Fruit, water, and a touch of organic cane sugar — that’s it! We believe that clean food can be delicious, real food should be simple, and that everyone should delight in special food experiences. Soft Serve Fruit is the delicious alternative to the artificial ingredients of frozen yogurt, and the fat and dairy of ice cream.
Shortly after opening our first store in NYC, we discovered that our simple, clean creation also worked as a Pop! We took the exact same ingredients and put our creamy Soft Serve Fruit on a stick. The high fruit content and absence of binders like guar gum and carrageenan add to the intense fruit flavor of our pops, and give them what we call a slow drip factor. The fruit alone is a natural binder, and keeps the pops from melting as quickly as your typical ice pop. (You’re welcome, parents!)
Schools, universities, camps, retailers, entertainment venues, corporate cafeterias, and hospitals all agreed, signed on, and loved this easy way to introduce clean frozen treats to their venue. While a machine to dispense Soft Serve Fruit is not always easy, Chloe's Pops are. (Even better, we are now launching our 4-pack of Pops in supermarkets across the country, so it will be much easier to snag some!)
Chloe's loves enabling people to make great choices. You can choose Chloe's for your snack, treat, or even meal and feel great about it. Moms, foodies, the health conscious, those with food sensitivities, kids — all love and appreciate the value and experience of the Chloe's brand. A consensus among Moms is that you can confidently and happily give your kids a Chloe's treat any time of day, guilt-free. Children perceive it as a treat, and parents don't cringe when feeding it to them. I feel so lucky to have created something my kids feel so connected to and excited about.
Chloe’s is ever evolving — we now offer a slushy made from our soft serve fruit, we dip and roll our pops in toppings, we are launching a new breakfast menu within the next few weeks, and this summer, we will have a mobile truck in the Hamptons (living in Montauk and traveling all over) complete with all of our soft serve fruit treats.
We are also so looking forward to making Chloe's more accessible nationwide for the upcoming spring/summer seasons. Look out for our Chloe's van and Brand Ambassadors traveling around Texas, California, Portland, and Georgia in the next few months (#ChloesCoast2Coast), and fill your freezers with Chloe's Pops from your favorite markets including Krogers, Whole Foods San Francisco, HEB, Mrs. Green's, Fresh and Easy, Erewhons, and many more. Enjoy the cool way to eat fruit!
