One of the things we love so much when it comes to health, self-care, and wellness in general is the re-discovery of various old/ancient methods of healing and prevention. With history comes the wisdom and knowledge of the various healing properties, ones that we can apply and benefit from in our own modern lives and bodies. Activated Charcoal is far from being a crazy modern fad — it’s been used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine for its healing and protective powers and properties.
We’ve been keeping charcoal on-hand for years now, to combat any intestinal/food poisoning issues, to take when we travel, and to relieve feelings of toxicity and fatigue due to overindulgence or jet lag. But it has only been this past year that we’ve started experimenting with charcoal on a more regular basis, for more general detoxification assistance. We’ve loved the results, which led us to create our charcoal drink, Black Magic, and to incorporate it into our newest cleanse, Forward Motion 2015.
But what is Activated Charcoal, exactly? Why is it showing up in drinks at NYC juice bars? And what exactly does it do? Read on, my friends.
Activated Charcoal is created when charcoal is heated in an inert environment to expand its surface area and increase its porousness. The large porous surface area (2 grams being approximately the surface area of a football field!) creates bonding sites where poisons, toxins, and gases become attached, trapped, and taken prisoner. These “prisoners” are then removed from the body when the charcoal is excreted. This process is called Adsorption.
**Adsorption is the process by which liquid or gaseous molecules are concentrated on a solid surface. This is different from absorption, where molecules are taken up by a liquid or gas.
Activated Charcoal — Why?
Activated Charcoal is able to extract and neutralize thousands of times its own weight in gases, heavy metals, toxins, poisons, and other chemicals. It’s a great agent for detox: cleansing and assisting the healing process of the body, preventing/helping hangovers, and helping with all manner of nausea and bloating, intestinal issues/food poisoning/gases. It is used medically for Drug Overdose, Toxicity, and Poisoning.
We like to take it either first thing in the morning or else at the end of the evening. In addition to really helping with (ahem) all the party food and adult beverages over the past few months, it makes us feel very sharp and focused, and really helps to get rid of that feeling of sluggishness we all feel sometimes (admit it!).
Black is The New Black
We are just a tad bit obsessed with our zesty lemon/charcoal purification elixir, Black Magic. We wanted to include Charcoal in our lineup, and we also wanted to create a very clean, refreshing drink. And, as we just haven’t found enough assurance that charcoal won’t bind to the nutrition in a green blend, or a protein shake, say, we opted for the cleansing and alkalizing simplicity of zesty lemonade. The Coconut Charcoal we use is very, very finely granulated, and is basically undetectable — except for the Armani-like black sleekness of the color it imparts, making the drink look pretty sexy.
Keep in mind!
Charcoal doesn’t necessarily differentiate between good and bad in its adsorptive powers. It’s basically power hungry and magnetizes anything it feels like. So make sure not to take important meds or even supplementation within 2 hours, just to be safe.
Also, it’s important to take plenty of water and fiber — no point in taking prisoners if you can’t kick them out of your body, and you need fiber and water for that!
DIY: Make your own Charcoal drink
Our preference, as in our Black Magic, is to keep any drink with Activated Charcoal super clean, simple, and purifying.
Here is a recipe to get a little Black Magic on at home:
· 1 glass filtered water
· Juice of half lemon
· 1 tsp. honey, coconut nectar, or maple syrup
· ½ - 1 tsp Activated Charcoal (We love this Coal-Conut brand!)
· Mix it up and drink it down!
Optional: Spice up your soot with a little grated ginger…mmm.
