We all know it’s easier in the summer — we want to be out, and our bodies crave light and alkalizing boosts like juices, blends, and smoothies. Now it’s cold (at least here in NYC), dark, stressful, and (overly) social. The reality is — for most of us — there’s going to be a lot more cocktails, cupcakes, skipped workouts, heavy food, and late nights than usual over the next month.
And that’s fine! Enjoy and be social and savor your missteps!
But keeping grounded and clean and energized from a base of nutritional goodness will prevent us from the downward spiral so many of us succumb to, where we just fling up our hands and yell — screw it, we’ll start over in the New Year. It’s exactly at times like this where it’s most vital to keep balanced, and an intrinsic element of balance is keeping nutritionally fed. Nothing is as potent at keeping your body and mind clean, energetic, and harmonious as a regular infusion of blends and juices — chock-full of healing, nourishing, and revitalizing greens. We keep balanced, so that the indulgences of the season do not throw us off course completely!
And the best part is that you can DIY this balance in your own home — both juices and blends have a place in a nutritious and amazing life. So what’s the difference between the two?
Juices are the liquid extracted from the vegetables and fruit, while the fiber is discarded. When done right, these provide an instant boost and supercharged supplement, and can infuse your body with an abundance of nutrients directly to your bloodstream.
Unless you have a Norwalk Press juicer (the Rolls-Royce of juicing, with the price tag to match) you will ideally want to include a base ingredient that is very juicy (i.e has a high water content) to go with the leafy greens to help along the juicing. As we ourselves do not use sweet fruit when juicing, due to spiking of blood sugar that occurs when sweet fruit is separated from the fiber, we opt for foods such as cucumber or celery.
We view juicing as more of a drinkable supplement — we believe it is best taken in the morning, on an empty stomach, and really gears you up for the day ahead. If you don’t care to make your own, there are numerous cold press juice options out there, but if you have the option, try to choose one on the market that is truly raw (has not been HPP) and very green.
What you need for juicing
When juicing at home, the best juicer is the one you actually will use, so despite everything we hear about the benefits of different juicers over classic centrifugal juicers, unless you have an excess of time and are truly devoted, we would suggest a standard juicer such as one of the Breville juicers — it’s very easy to use, very quick to clean, and is less apt to end up as a nonfunctioning statue on your counter.
DIY Juice Recipe: Easy Glowing UberGreen Juice
Caveat time! This is not the best tasting juice in the world. We don’t care. We’re pretty strict on forgoing the fruit when making juice, as the lack of fiber or fat makes any sugar create spikes that are inflammatory, depleting, and just not desirable. In lieu of fruit though, lemon and mint are very good secret weapons in cutting the green taste a bit. And you will feel so damn good.
● 1 large cucumber (keep the peel on if Organic — so many nutrients there!)
● 1 bunch chard, or kale (or dandelion if you’re hard core!)
● 1 bunch spinach
● Half a peeled lemon
● small piece of ginger (.5 of a thumb)
● Half a bunch of parsley or cilantro
● A handful of mint
You will want to drink your juice directly after making for greatest nutrient retention — drink down and you will feel the impact!
Blends are true blended WHOLE FOODS — all the fiber is kept in. Nutrient-dense, supercharged, and satiating, they are both superfunctional and delicious. (Our heart belongs to blends, obviously, as our company, Lulitonix, is devoted to the myriad amazing benefits of blending.)
The blending process ruptures the cellular walls, releasing the nutrients, and “chews” for us in a way that our teeth, time, and patience no longer allows us to do, creating super bioavailable nutrient-dense fare that can be tweaked any way we want. Fiber is essential in grabbing circulating toxins and fats, and escorting them OUT of your body. Blends create sustained long-lasting energy, and slow down blood sugar spikes. They also can replace meals, and we find them satiating, energizing, and pretty seriously addictive.
“Blends” can take many shapes — from all green “blended juice” to nut/coconut/seed-based superfood smoothies. With blending we can also choose to use and enjoy some fruit in our blends, as the abundant whole food fiber creates a gradual and sustained energy rush — no sugar spikes.
What you need for blending
For blends — the Vitamix is the gold standard. With the holidays coming up, if finances are tight, you can do nothing better than try to get this one as a gift. You will never regret it. We can’t imagine life without a Vitamix; it does everything. In addition to making true whole food blends, it’s also super fun. You can play and experiment, and really get to know what you like and what works. It’s so great to get confident with a Vitamix and create concoctions that are in tune with what you want. (Note: We have also heard very good things about the Nutribullet but have never used it.)
DIY Blend Recipe: Green Super Blend
We obviously love to jam tons of greens in our blends (can you say Kale obsessed?), but another secret weapon we have is the mighty Avocado. Liver detoxifying, energizing, and filled with copious “good fats” that speed your metabolism and give you the glow we all love, they are a true beauty food. Also, raw greens, lemons, and avocado all work synergistically together and amplify digestibility and absorption.
In a 64 Ounce Blender (all organic to the greatest extent possible):
● 4 cups filtered water
● 1.5 avocado
● 10 ounce frozen mango
● juice of half lemon
● 4-6 packed cups raw greens — can be a mix of kale, spinach, chard, lettuce — or even cilantro if you like it! (all washed and stalked)
● A few sprigs Mint if handy
● A small handful of cranberries — keeping it seasonal!
● A couple ice cubes to enhance the chill if wanted
Blend to desired consistency — feel free to play and experiment.

She began Vitamixing her own blends, laden with copious greens and superfoods, back in 2010, and quickly saw dramatic, positive improvements in both her physical and mental well-being. Compelled to share her new-found blend-induced wellness high/madness, she launched LuliTonix in fall 2012. LuliTonix is a Raw Organic blend company that harnesses the powerful health benefits of raw blended greens and a plethora of superfoods, in equal parts healing, badass, and totally addictive.
Paige Gregor joined LuliTonix in January of 2013 as Vice Blendy, after taking a break from a 4-year stint in the independent film industry. Having always had a strong passion for creating green smoothies and raw food in her own home, the LuliTonix philosophy resonated so strongly that she shifted gears and threw herself wholeheartedly into the "blendy life."
