While I have come to appreciate the power of saying no, it has never outweighed my belief in the power of saying yes. Ever since I was a kid, I always wanted to try everything. From gymnastics, to ice skating, to auditioning and getting into the School of American Ballet, to being fearless on skis before I could walk, to playing every sport under the sun, to competing nationally in three-day horse eventing (the adrenaline junkies’ equestrian sport).
In fact, I had a such an insane schedule as a teenager, that I used to wake up at 3:30am to ride horses, go to school, practice with my after-school sports teams, come home and do my homework, and do it all again the next day. I even had an adjusted school schedule, so I could be on the road for eventing during horse competition season. I once asked my mother later in life if she ever thought it was all too much for me, and she, without hesitation, said, “Of course I did, but do you think I had any power to stop you?”
This innate desire to push myself, and to always be up for life’s many adventures and challenges, has continued and has led me to some of my greatest adventures and achievements. I’ve traveled to many undiscovered corners of world, I’ve worked for companies large and small, and eventually I was up for the challenge of starting my own company (now twice over). I’ve thrown my heart on the line to fall in love and also to have it broken, and I was even up for the task of quitting my job to be a caretaker for my mother for five years while she was battling cancer. So yes, I think it’s fair to say that I’m up for just about anything!
So when Athleta reached out to me to ask if I’d like to be a part of their “Up for Anything” campaign to celebrate the release of their new Up for Anything tight, I was, indeed, up for it. The challenge: To find an activity or workout class I had never done before, and invite a friend to join me on the adventure — all while wearing these leggings that could truly be worn for any activity, or even a night out on the town. Right away I knew exactly what I wanted to try, as it has been on my bucket list for a while - TRAPEZE! Unfortunately, due to scheduling snafus, that didn’t quite work out (pun intended! Workout. Get it?), only further enticing my “Up for Anything” attitude.
However, it seems that I’m SO up for anything, that I have already tried just about every workout in NYC (not to mention, that’s pretty much been my job as founder of The Sweat Life for the last 4 years!). So I had to get creative.
Perhaps I had done every class, but had I done any of them outside? In the middle of winter? On a busy street in Tribeca? No, I hadn’t. And neither had my “Up for Anything” partner in crime, Alex Blodgett, Co-Founder of Cyc and Revere.
So I reached out to another “up for anything” friend, founder of the Bari Studio, Alexandra Bonetti. I asked if she would be willing to have one of her trainers teach us this trampoline-based workout outside in the streets of Tribeca. And what I love most, about both Alexes, is neither one of them even hesitated at the idea! Alex Blodgett met me with an enthusiastic, “Let’s do it,” while Alexandra Bonetti quickly responded with an, “Obviously, yes!”
A few days later, on a balmy (aka FREEZING) January afternoon in NYC, clad in our Up for Anything tights, Alex and I headed into the streets of Tribeca, each with a trampoline in tow, ready to bounce it out in the winter cold. While neither of us were quick to take our jackets off, within only a few minutes of this fun, yet super intense, workout, we had both stripped down to our sports bras and were breaking a sweat. We were having so much fun, we barely even noticed the small crowd that had formed to watch these two girls in matching Athleta outfits bouncing on trampolines in the middle of a New York City street. And while the idea felt a bit random at first, Alex and I got an extra core workout from smiling so much and laughing so loudly, as it was just so fun!
So what's the lesson here? It is always these moments in life — when you just say yes, when you decide to do something on a whim, or push yourself to try something new. — these are the moments when the unforgettable magic happens.
And as silly as it may sound, I will never forget that afternoon, bouncing around in the winter temps and sunshine with my dear friend, in our very favorite new leggings.
