ClassPass users were just finishing their morning workout, and happily enjoying the walk home in post-sweat bliss to commence their work day, when today’s fateful ClassPass email popped into their inboxes.
We started ClassPass with one mission: to make the world a more active place.
As our community of members has grown, it’s become clear that our business must evolve to meet their needs.”
What does “evolve” mean exactly? It turns out it's business speak for a huge increase in the ClassPass monthly membership. In fact, the membership fee, once $99 a month for unlimited classes, will now be increasing to… wait for it… $190. For the EXACT SAME service.
To be entirely fair, the price increase has been gradual — the first ClassPass monthly rate increase was from $99 to $125 almost a year ago in July 2015. And ClassPass will also be offering a new option, a limited membership for 10 classes per month (as opposed to unlimited classes) at the same $125 rate.
And, as we here at The Sweat Life know, boutique fitness in NYC doesn’t come cheap. But, double the original price?!
It’s no secret that the boutique fitness studios and ClassPass have been at odds for quite a while, trying to find a happy medium between the benefit for the studios and the savings for the fitness-goer. So we can certainly say we’ve seen this coming.
Yet — ClassPass, once a way to get a foot into the boutique fitness scene in NYC (now available in close to 40 cities) is now just as expensive as an all-inclusive membership at some of the most exclusive gyms in the city. (A membership at Equinox hovers at about $200.) We'll let you sit on that.
We couldn't help but ask ourselves — what does this mean for the future of ClassPass?
We want to hear your opinion. Do you use ClassPass? Will you upgrade your unlimited membership for $190? Keep your membership at 10 classes a month for $125? Or just say “Thanks, but no thanks” to the whole thing?
