After exploring and teaching different fitness styles and formats for many years, I knew there was a space in the fitness world for the Cyc Method. There were no other boutique studios teaching a fun, social, and challenging workout that combined cardio and strength training like Cyc.
The spring of 2012 was a pivotal point in my career: I was an Under Armour sponsored athlete, a master trainer for Barry’s Bootcamp, and was teaching my signature fitness method, DRENCHED, at several locations around the city. I was blessed to be named “2012 Best Trainer in NYC” by the Village Voice, and was feeling inspired to dive into new modalities and create another method. It was around this time that I partnered with Cyc co-founders Stephen Nitkin and Alex Blodgett to create a studio that was geared more towards millennials. I was excited about helping young adults live a healthier lifestyle, and have fun while doing it.
First things first: we needed a method. To start to create what would become the Cyc method, I parked myself in a group exercise room and filled it with various equipment including bikes, weights, and tension bands. Over the next 4 months, it continued to evolve until it ultimately became a 9-sector party on a bike. I added the sports specific weighted movements, such as boxing, volleyball, and basketball, to guarantee we were giving riders a full body workout. To-date, the method includes over 20 different sectors and is constantly evolving.
The 45-minute interactive show is in state of the art “theatres” or studios, and led by a “Cycologist,” giving riders the ultimate fitness experience. Cyc gives riders the chance to escape from the stress of daily life, reach their fitness goals, and have fun while doing it.
I knew we had struck gold at the opening of our first studio in Madison, Wisconsin, when we opened the doors to waitlisted classes. That feeling is one I will never forget.
We recently introduced four new formats so our riders have different options. Cyc 45, our signature format that incorporates 40% of the sports specific weighted sectors; Cyc Lean, where we eliminate the weights, and focus on endurance with both heavy and light resistance to torch calories; Cyc Lift, which can include up to 70% sports specific weighted sectors; and Cyc 60, where we give you that extra 15-minute push to achieve your goals.
We are constantly evolving, and will continue to challenge and elevate every athlete that steps into our show. Get Cyc’d!
