By Vanessa Martin, Founder
SIN Workouts is a full-service fitness concierge for NYC dwellers, eliminating all the pesky barriers that pop up when navigating the fitness world — like hard-to-get class signups, and sweaty workout clothes with no washing machine in sight. The title – SIN – is an acronym for “Strength in Numbers,” and founder Vanessa Martin has offered herself and her staff as the “numbers,” focused on keeping people around the city moving. SIN Workouts’ one-stop service covers anything you may need fitness-wise — booking classes, waking you up in the morning with a fresh juice, taking the class alongside you, laundry service for your gym clothes — but more importantly, they also create a tailored workout plan, and track your progress. Vanessa tells us more about why SIN Workouts is so in-demand, and how you can use SIN to reinvent your workouts for spring.
What exactly is the SIN experience?
As a SIN Workouts Monthly Member, you will be paired with a Fitness Concierge who will design your weekly workout programs, and handle all sign-ups and class registrations, while maintaining a client profile.
Our SIN Workouts Elite Membership is when a client is provided with a workout partner, an increased level of accountability, and an added level of service and introduction experiencing a new workout or studio. Your Fitness Concierge will meet you at the scheduled workout and take class with you, assist with equipment setup, and provide form correction (and a ton of motivation!) throughout the session.
Additional services at SIN include car service, laundry service, and a traveling juice bar. SIN also believes in working with the community to help build upon this fitness family, and we host our signature, "SWEAT and SIN" events on a monthly basis, where we open it up to the public to come together, workout, have fun, make memories — and toast afterwards.
How did SIN get started & what sparked the idea for the company?
I previously worked as a Managing Director with a company that specialized in high-end gym design and facility management. Our flagship project was the very prestigious 15 Central Park West. We would design from the ground up and/or renovate existing residential fitness centers, and employ the trainers, instructors, massage therapists, and more for each location. At the time (early 2011), I began to notice a rise in interest in boutique fitness. One of my jobs within this company was to keep my finger on the pulse of the NYC fitness industry. As a result, I started to scour the scene to see what workout options people were being afforded outside of the traditional big box gyms like Equinox.
My effort was simply focused on seeing what was "hot," and then bringing these options to our company's projects. Residents of these buildings are paying an extreme amenity fee for their fitness center, and we wanted to be sure we were offering the best of the best in this exclusive setting. That being said — I found myself studio-hopping on a regular basis, and the residents of our projects quickly noticed. I would be sprinting back to my office in the buildings’ gyms, post-workout…. so clearly looking a bit sweaty! And everyone would want to know where I was coming from.
The energy and excitement I had when explaining to them the experience I just had at Barry's Bootcamp, or the ride I just went on at Flywheel, made them intrigued to try it out. When I mentioned that our company was looking to possibly bring classes like this to their beautiful and private locations, their reactions surprised me. They actually preferred that they go to the studio itself. There was however, a catch. They only wanted to go if I went with them. Therein, SIN and the concept of Strength In Numbers was born. I found myself now going to classes with these residents on a very regular basis. It was actually a joke with the doormen of the building, as we would hop in our car to head to class! Catering to this demographic meant eliminating anything associated with the sign-up process. They were willing to go, if I went and if I signed them up.
How can you use SIN to reinvent your workout?
SIN works with all of our clients on a very close basis. We don't just sign clients up for workouts and send them on their way. Each program curated by our concierge staff is customized specifically for the individual. Through this process we are able to introduce our SINners to new experiences, studios, and instructors they may not have ever thought of trying in the past.
We deal with a wide variety of clients: fitness enthusiasts that are super familiar with workout offerings, as well as those who are totally new to this world. In either case, we work to diversify their training programs, implement cross-training, stress the educational component as to "why" you are doing what you are doing, and notice the results and gains (both mentally and physically) when incorporating variety in your training. We keep close measure on our clients’ performance, and recap at the end of each month during our scheduled consultations.
Your training is a whole new process when you have someone by your side monitoring it for you — and giving you, like, a lot of high-fives.
