Athleta has long been a fitness and lifestyle fashion brand that understands getting in a good workout is about more than just the clothing. Feeling stellar in your workout wear is just part of the picture — it’s about feeling amazing in the body beneath those clothes, and giving full credit to the brains behind the whole operation. It’s what Athleta calls “Power to the She,” empowering women to kick some serious you know what. From in-store fitness classes, to allowing women to actually try their fitness wear in a workout before deciding that it works, Athleta consistently strives to celebrate strong, #sweat-driven women. Here, Ashley McCullough from Athleta gives some insight on why all these elements are important to feeling our best.
It’s all about feeling amazing. That’s what we mean when we talk about raising the bar. Not just in the middle of a workout when you get your heart rate up to 90% for two minutes straight in spin class (imagine), or bring your mile time below 6:30 (can anyone we know actually do this?).
Sure, those things can help you feel pretty amazing in the moment. But feeling amazing all the time comes from pushing yourself to do more – no matter your starting point. It comes from knowing that potential is a point in the distance, and that every day you work toward it brings it within reach, until one day, you wake up and you’re there.
It’s about helping others reach their potential, too, simply by being willing to spend the day on the bunny slope with a friend, or running at your “talking pace” for a whole race because you know it will keep a friend going for the full 10K.
At Athleta, we believe when you have the confidence of knowing you look great, you’re already halfway there. That’s why our performance technical apparel is fashion-fueled and made to work for everything we do. We want to be able to go from barre class to lunch without having to change our clothes.
The clothes speak volumes: Printed tights in styles that make us look long and lean. Strappy back bras and tanks that show off just a little bit more muscle that we didn’t have last year. Flattering run shorts. Swimsuits that look awesome and stay put when we’re out surfing. Dresses. Technical jackets we re-appropriate for going out to dinner. And all the apparel to bring stylish comfort to our down time.
You already feel good, and look good — so go out there and do it all. Be everything you ever imagined you might be. Raise the bar for yourself, and inspire others to do the same. Go faster. Run longer. Twist deeper. Lift more. Spike it. Ace it. Own it. Go out and be amazing. It’s contagious.
Ashley McCullough was born and raised in San Francisco. She was a professional cyclist, and still spends more time with her bike than she does with most friends and family. She trained to fight Muay Thai in Pattaya and Chiang Mai, and climbed frozen waterfalls all over the Northeast. She speed climbed Mt. Rainier with a climbing ranger pal, and hiked up into the high Himalayas nursing food poisoning, only to be thwarted by a snowed-in pass. She doesn't know how to apply makeup (without looking a little like Dustin Hoffman in Tootsie) but she can stumble fairly adeptly in heels. Her most recent obsession is surfing, and all vacations are spent seeking perfect lefts. She lives with a bearded dude, a couple of dogs, and pretty soon a screaming baby. She works as the editorial lead for Athleta.
