After my recent surf trip to Nicaragua, I have a new appreciation for surf fashion. While I live in workout clothes, the majority of my closet is spandex and sneakers. Luckily, as “athleisure” is becoming more and more popular (and acceptable to wear outside of the studio), so many of these clothes are both cute and functional — allowing me to seamlessly run from a workout to a meeting or even a dinner.
However, surf fashion has taken this mixture of fashion and function to a new level. Surfing, while from the outside may look like a beautiful and graceful sport — when you are out there in the water fighting through or riding waves, it is easy for any piece of clothing to get tossed around as much as you do. The last thing you want to have to think about when you’ve finally caught a beautiful wave is that you are putting on a whole different kind of show for the people on the beach and fellow surfers in the water. Furthermore, there are the realities of surf rash, which aren’t pretty. (Enough said.) Within two days of surfing, my stomach, upper thighs, and inner arms were all bruised and rashed from my board, so it’s important to stay as protected as possible.
Luckily, some of our favorite brand partners had me covered (literally and figuratively) for surf gear, which was not only comfortable and functional to wear in the water, but transitioned perfectly to hang time on the beach! Below, check out some of the pieces and looks provided to me by Athleta, Tory Sport, Cynthia Rowley, Vira Sun, and Wala Swim!
