Partners in Crime: Dara and Jay Godfrey

By Dara and Jay Godfrey

We love a creative couple, a duo who just appears to exist seamlessly and effortlessly while still looking chic and creating great things: they are happy, they are successful, creative, healthy, and we all wonder how they do it. Fashion designer Jay Godfrey and his nutritionist wife, Dara (who coaches clients at her private practice from gyms like Body By Simone, and fertility clients looking to get pregnant), are all these things and more — the “more” being their two spirited young daughters Allegra and Bardot. We wanted to hear how they make it all work — and how Jay creates such incredible dresses, of course — so we asked both Jay and Dara to answer the same round of questions to get the story from both perspectives.

JAY

What is your career passion & why are you good at it?

I am passionate about making women feel confident and sexy through design. I am truly blessed to be able to do what I love every day and express myself creatively. I think, as a man, I have a different perspective on how to design for women, and I design to make women look and feel better in a modern, clean, sensual way.

What is it about fashion/nutrition that draws you in?

Fashion is constantly evolving and there’s a perennial goal of innovation. There are few other industries that change so quickly and often. I crave newness.

How did you two meet?

Blind date over sushi!

What do you love most about your partner?

Dara is strong, tenacious, caring, and the best mother. She’s also beyond thoughtful.

Do you think it was inevitable that you chose someone creative as your life partner?

Yes. We are both creative but in very different ways. Temperamentally, we are completely different and we kind of have a ying and yang relationship. Dara is far more balanced!

What do you think makes your partnership work well?

She’s calm. I’m excitable. But we are super real with each other.

Do you talk work/shop at home?

No. Never. By the end of each day, the last thing I want to talk about is fashion!

Where, if anywhere, have you found your creative careers intersecting at any points?

Certainly. I value Dara’s advice and direction from the perspective that she’s the prototype of the JG customer. Also, because fashion is such an image conscious business, Dara’s always helping my team and I stay healthy.

Any advice or insight into keeping a creative couple happy?

Lots of date nights. At least once a week!!!!!! And learn to laugh together. And getting Dara drunk every now and again!

DARA

What is your career passion & why are you good at it?

I truly love what I do. Guiding people to live cleaner, healthier lives (in any environment) is something I enjoy doing every day. I enjoy the challenge of customizing meal plans and tailoring nutrition goals with each patient. And working with my fertility patients has been especially rewarding, since I was a fertility patient myself!

What is it about fashion/nutrition that draws you in?

Finding the right balance to make your body work as efficiently as possible is really intriguing. And to share that with people who are really interested in maximizing their health and well-being is such a pleasure. Knowing that I can help change someone’s habits for life is the best reward of all.

How did you two meet?

On a blind date. Although we are from the same neighborhood back in Toronto, Canada, we were fixed up in NYC back in 2002.

What do you love most about your partner?

Jay’s sense of humor is the biggest turn on. He doesn’t take life too seriously and loves being a kid. That’s part of what makes him such a great hands-on father to our two girls.

Do you think it was inevitable that you chose someone creative as your life partner?

Since I’m more of a science geek, I think it was only natural to be with someone more artistic than myself. We really balance each other well. I am more of the organized, structured partner and Jay is definitely more spontaneous and creative.

What do you think makes your partnership work well?

Definitely communication is key. Unlike most men, he is very open and honest in all aspects of life. Being very black-and-white helps me really understand what’s on his mind (even if it’s a hard pill to swallow!). We are each other’s best friends, and making the time to have weekly date nights and short vacations alone helps strengthen our marriage.

Do you talk work/shop at home?

NEVER! When Jay comes home, the last thing he wants to do is talk shop. He has long work days and has a high-stress job. And for my job, privacy for my patients is key, so I will really only tell him if I had a super busy day. It’s kind of nice to have our work life separate from our personal life.

Where, if anywhere, have you found your creative careers intersecting at any points?

We tend to keep our work separate, but I do love going into his office and bringing healthy snacks/meals for his crew. I also have said in the past that I need to hand out my card to the models he works with to make sure they’re taking care of their bodies from the inside out!

Any advice or insight into keeping a creative couple happy?

Having a balanced physical and emotional relationship is key!

New York-based designer Jay Godfrey is the founder and creative director behind his eponymous collection of sleek, sexy and sophisticated designs. Perpetually inspired by the chic New York woman, Godfrey’s goal as a designer is to meld the classic tailoring techniques of Savile Row with modern silhouettes and luxurious fabrics. The result is his distinctive contemporary collection of dresses and separates that accentuate the female figure. Godfrey describes himself as a minimalist who embraces color in an unmistakably sensual way.

Having only been in business for nine years, Godfrey has quickly cultivated his signature aesthetic, which perfectly lends itself to the fashion-forward and glamorous woman. The collection has caught the media’s attention and has been featured in WWD, ELLE, Cosmopolitan and the New York Post. Godfrey’s designs have also captured a loyal celebrity following and he is proud to have dressed Eva Longoria, Jennifer Lopez, Kim Kardashian, Laverne Cox, Olivia Palermo and Taraji P. Henson. In 2008, Parsons The New School for Design presented the designer with the Parsons Alumni Achievement Award in recognition of his talent and recent accomplishments.

Jay Godfrey’s first free-standing boutique opened in April 2012 in New York’s historic Meatpacking District. Godfrey’s collection is also sold in House of Fraser, Intermix, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom and Stanley Korshak, as well as numerous luxury online retailers and boutiques worldwide.
