By Lauren Imparato
Lauren Imparato is a force to be reckoned with. Her NYC studio, I.AM.YOU yoga, reaches yogis all over NYC and beyond looking for a sweaty yoga practice and a spiritual home. Her studio has also become a meeting place for events that challenge the norm, and her RETOX brand of life coaching, which evolved into her new book, RETOX. Sound like Lauren’s busy? She is! So what’s a Day in the Sweat Life life for her? Read on…
1. What is the first thing you do when you wake up?
Unfortunately, check my phone. But it is for a good reason! It is to message my husband that I love him and to have a great day, even though usually I get to read a similar message from him he sent a bit earlier on his way to the office.
2. What is your go-to workout?
Clearly RETOX yoga. It’s cardio + sweaty. Athletic + meditative. And above all, fun. I have never loved my body more than I do since I started I.AM.YOU. and began RETOXing every day.
3. What does a typical day of meals and snacks look like for you?
I eat a ton, and it varies a lot based on where I am in the world and my schedule. At least one salad a day, and one coffee, mainly for the taste, as I have enough energy as is without the caffeine. With the morning coffee I have either a cantaloupe, an almond croissant (my fave), or 2 eggs or 2 egg whites, depending on what I feel like my body needs and what I ate the day before. I grab some almonds mid morn so I can think fast and effectively as I work. I try and target my large raw greens midday to avoid Alien Baby Bloat – and have a big salad of romaine and red leaf lettuce with mixed veggies, olive oil, and lemon or vinegar. In the afternoon I let myself have a second lunch, or first dinner - usually a cup of soup or broth, sometimes with a perfect chocolate chip cookie (you will love my recipe in RETOX!). Dinner depends on so, so many variables, but since it is the only time of the day I can share a meal with my loved ones, I don’t box myself into some stressful way of eating – I just enjoy. That means a homemade pasta or sauté or a steak, burger, fish, you name it. Eating is pleasure, and nourishes you so much more when you LET it.
4. What is your favorite indulgence?
Trips to the beach. They take time and money - but they heal and inspire me inside and out. The sea is my #1. You will notice it in RETOX.
5. What is your healthy living philosophy?
LIVE LIFE TO THE FULLEST. Don’t stress about being healthy – just be you, and RETOX to become your best you. You only live once, so you better enjoy it, and be thankful for it.
6. Do you meditate?
Yes! I HATED meditation to begin with — it really killed me, especially at 4am before getting to the trading floor. Now, I have intensely studied Tibetan Buddhist philosophy, and base all my RETOX practices on that. It is logic-based, which appeals to my rational mind. I created free 1-, 6- and 12-minute meditations for you on my podcast, so you can always meditate, too. Meditating is just breathing, after all.
7. What can we find in your gym bag?
Water. Maybe half a cookie – chocolate chip or oatmeal raisin. Iphone charger. Nike post-workout kicks. Yoga mat.
8. What is your favorite active wear brand?
I love pieces from all brands, but Nike has been #1 since I was a young, young child. My first pair of cleats, spikes, and of course b-ball shoes, are all Nike, just to name a few. I wore Jordans under my wedding dress — and, well, it goes on from there. I.AM.YOU. is the JUST DO IT of yoga, RETOX the Just Do It of wellness.
9. What is the last thing you do before you go to bed?
Thank god for everything he has given me, and ask him to protect my husband and family.
10. What or who inspires you?
My family, especially my mother. She never stops giving, even when she is wiped and everyone is tugging on her from every direction. She was one of the first females to graduate from Harvard Business School, and sharper than a whip. A few years after I was born she gave up her great career so that my sister and I would be able to chase our dreams, but continues to learn, teach, and work, inspiring and educating everyone she touches. She is the most incredible person I know.
