By Bethany Lyons
Bethany Lyons is a force to be reckoned with — she is a badass yoga teacher, and the founder of one of the most inspiring yoga studios in NYC (also the only Baptiste yoga studio in the city!), Lyons Den Power Yoga. Bethany is also an inspiration in how she lives her life, fueled by passion. As she likes to say, “Courage > Fear.” So what does a Day in the Sweat Life look like for Bethany? Read on.
1. What is the first thing you do when you wake up?
Brush my teeth and drink a big glass of water. Then black, strong coffee. (I cannot have the coffee until I’ve had the water).
2. What is your go-to workout?
Baptiste Power Vinyasa Yoga, which is the style we practice at Lyons Den Power Yoga (and one of the many reasons I opened the studio!).
I also love to dance, and love a good cardio party on the bike. I am one of the original SoulCycle instructors and still teach at Soul a few times a week – it’s so fun!
3. What does a typical day of meals and snacks look like for you?
I don’t have a typical day because as an entrepreneur, and mover & shaker - every day my schedule changes with shoots, travel, classes and meetings so frequently. So, all that being said…
I typically have something light for breakfast, like a KIND Coconut & Almond Bar. I know they say it is supposed to be the biggest meal, but this night owl has trouble downing a large breakfast. Then I have smaller fueling sessions all day… Lulitonix raw, organic, green blends (I sound like such a yoga teacher!) are usually a part of my daily routine. We carry them at the yoga studio – so it’s convenient, fast, AND healthy. My favorites are GLOW and CHILL - but they are all so good! I might grab two organic hard-boiled eggs and an Americano with almond milk if I missed my morning coffee. A salad or soup comes into play usually once a day — I love miso soup! A small bag of roasted, unsalted almonds or raw cashews to refuel and keep my energy going. Dinner is sushi, or a grilled piece of fish and veggies. Sometimes a couple slices of a veggie-loaded, thin-crust pizza. I am a huge veggie girl — all veggies, all preparations. Dirt Candy (the restaurant) is like heaven to me… I also drink water – both still and sparkling – throughout the day, like a camel. I love lime and orange slices in water.
4. What is your favorite indulgence?
Wine. Good wine. Life is too short to drink bad wine.
Oh, and if I am dining out, and warm, good bread comes to the table — yea, I’m pretty much gonna dive right in there.
5. What is your healthy living philosophy?
DO WHAT YOU LOVE and what makes you FEEL ALIVE.
DO THE WORK, it is the only thing that works.
GIVE YOURSELF (& everyone else) A F*CKING BREAK – aren’t we all just trying to do our best?
6. Do you meditate?
Yes — and I am also not rigid that “I must meditate” every single day for everything to be okay. I love taking 10 minutes to sit quietly, or listen to a guided meditation (I love the Headspace app!). I also love taking a meditative walk with my rescue-pup, Josie, to the water and then sitting with her in meditation.
7. What can we find in your gym bag?
A “lyon” bandana branded for Lyons Den Power Yoga. I wear a bandana when working out or practicing almost always because I sweat like a man. (No really – it is impressive.)
Ultima Electrolyte powder (for game-on hydration).
A notebook and my day planner. I'm so, so old-school – I must write dates and ideas down, ink to paper.
A baggie of roasted, unsalted almonds for emergency hunger situations.
A Lyons Den Power Yoga branded, black UFit Towel (the best!) for laying over my yoga mat that keeps me from slipping, period.
A Lyons Den tank to throw on for or after class.
Sweat bags for wet, post-workout clothes.
iPhone 5 in gold (I have yet to upgrade)
8. What is your favorite active wear brand?
Honestly, I play the field. I love so many and they all offer specific pieces and attributes that make me happy.
Candida Maria leggings – We carry them at The Den because they feel like second skin – so soft – and come in the most fun prints.
Athleta – Functional for athletes, and fashionable pieces to layer. I love their tanks, light terry sweats, and studio-to-street wear. I love that their models are also ATHLETES – for real.
Lole – Hello to a brand I recently discovered. It feels so luxe, and the craftsmanship and detail put into each piece is outstanding.
Sweaty Betty – Off the beaten path pieces that are unique and fun.
lululemon – Find me one yogini that does not love a good Y-back bra or tank!? Also the classic long legging is perfect for the heated-style of practice we do at The Den. It catches the sweat, doesn’t move, and always looks good (classic black and this poppy color they had once are my favorites!). Also, the lined, dancer warm-up pants are my staple go-to. I wear them over workout gear ALL winter long (I have them in grey, navy & black).
9. What is the last thing you do before you go to bed?
Program the coffee maker & snuggle with Josie.
10. What or who inspires you?
The students and the team at Lyons Den Power Yoga and those in the greater, worldwide Baptiste Family inspire me on a daily basis. I am consistently in awe of the people I am surrounded by and the people I get to work with. The collective themes of people that inspire me are the following: they are willing to look at challenges as opportunities; they show up for each other; they celebrate successes; they are flawed and human and always looking to raise the bar; and they are kind and generous and generally badass. They are courageous.
I am most lit up when in the classroom, working on a project with my team or at a Baptiste program.
The most powerful and inspiring people I know - and that I love to be around - are a stand for others through action.
