By Gwen Jorgensen
Gwen Jorgensen is a two-time International Triathlon Union World Champion, 2012 Olympian, and frontrunner for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games — where she hopes to be the first American to win a Gold in the triathlon event. Add to that, she is now also sponsored by 24 Hour Fitness, alongside fellow prestigious Olympic athletes. To say she is at the top of her game would certainly be an understatement! Readying herself to head to Rio to begin training for the Olympic Games, we caught Gwen before she takes off, to ask what a Day in the Sweat Life is like for her. Read on…
What is the first thing you do when you wake up?
Check my phone for the workouts I have for the day, and then I go running.
What is your go-to workout?
I do whatever Coach Jamie prescribes, but if I got to choose my day, I would do:
· 30 minute easy jog in the morning (at above 5 min/km pace)
· Hour and 30 minute swim with the Wollongong Wizards in the ocean, where Jamie sets up a mock course with buoys and we do race simulation
· Hour and 30 minute bike ride where we bike to a hill and do 4x4 minute hill repeats
What does a typical day of meals and snacks look like for you?
A lot! See my blog post of A Day at the Table. But to sum it up: oats, eggs, rice, veggies, meat, peanut butter and rice cakes, Greek yogurt and raisins, muesli, and more meat, potatoes, and veggies in salad form.
What is your favorite indulgence?
Lying in bed all day long. Or ice cream milkshakes for breakfast.
What is your healthy living philosophy?
I believe fully committing yourself to what you want to succeed in is more beneficial than trying to do a bunch of things at 50 percent. With that being said, when work is done, it is imperative to not think about work and to focus on something else. For instance, when I train, I train to capacity and push myself to the limits, however, when the training is done for the day, I don’t talk about triathlon. Instead, I focus on other things I love, like food. If you ever hang out with me you will notice that I am almost always talking about food. At breakfast, I think about lunch. At lunch, I think about dinner, etc.
Do you meditate?
What is your favorite active wear brand?
What is the last thing you do before you go to bed?
Give Patrick (my husband) a kiss good night and tell him three things he did that I appreciated that day.
What or who inspires you?
I don’t have any idols, but I am inspired by some others in my sport. Javier Gomez, in particular, is someone that I look up to. He is a five time World Champion in ITU Triathlon and is also a World Champion in Xterra and 70.3 distance. He seems to be able to do it all!
