The Naked Truth: Nude Yoga Girl

By Nude Yoga Girl

If you haven’t seen Nude Yoga Girl yet, it’s time. This dreamy Instagram account is filled with beautifully lit, expertly staged, black-and-white images of a young woman in — you guessed it — nude yoga poses. All the intimate parts of her body are angled away from the camera or touched up to be suitable for social media, and what remains are simply breathtaking images. Launched just under a year ago in August of 2015, the account has racked up over 350K followers, and still the subject’s identity has remained a mystery — we know she is 26, a photographer & model, and she stages and lights every photo herself, she only asks that her boyfriend press the button on the camera. Here, we reached out to Nude Yoga Girl to hear more.

What exactly inspired the original idea for NYG, and why nude?

I wanted to bring together two of my passions, yoga and photography. I say photography because even if my boyfriend presses the button, I set up all the lighting and get the camera settings ready, etc. I also love to write about healthy and happy lifestyles, and inspire people to love themselves. And why nude… I want to show that nudity is not just sexual. For me, it´s more artistic when you can see the poses, shapes, and lines very clearly. Also it's simple, raw, and natural, and supports my account´s message. ''You are beautiful exactly the way you are.'' Starting this account was really spontaneous, I just found a new artistic way to express myself.

Your yoga poses are beautiful (and might we add, some are quite challenging!). How long have you been practicing yoga, and how often do you practice?

I have done yoga for several years, but about a year ago I really got into it and started to do it daily. I do yoga almost every day now, some days many hours and some days just a few sun salutations or handstand practices. I have always been very sporty and done different kinds of sports, which has helped me learn some of the asanas.

How important is your yoga practice & how does it affect your clarity & your sense of self?

I love how yoga calms my mind, gets me relaxed, and gives me energy. After yoga I always feel good. Yoga is one of my favourite things in the day, and it also gives me challenges and a feeling of joy when I improve. The most important thing is that yoga makes me concentrate on how I feel on the inside. It brings me more self-confidence and self-knowledge. I'm able to be only in the present moment. I´m happy to know that no matter what will happen in life, I will always have yoga and my mat.

Are you more comfortable with your body as a result of NYG, or do you still have hangups as well? I know you have talked about finding peace in being more "gentle" with yourself.

Yoga helped me to love my body, and find self-acceptance and peace with myself. With NYG I just found a new way to express myself in an artistic way and share my message.

Your tag line is "You are beautiful exactly the way you are." What does that mean to you?

Especially nowadays, a lot of people feel that they are not good enough. This account's message is that you don't have to be anything more than you already are. Our society and social media give a false and wrong idea of beauty. Every single one of us is unique, and the human body is such a wonderful mechanism that is capable of beautiful things. I want to encourage people to love themselves. It's very important.

We know you've gotten some feedback about how it must be easy for you to use that motto, when you look like a typical model body type — and you have responded on your site. Can you speak to that?

One thing that I want to say to everyone... It really doesn't matter how you look, you can still find faults in your body and feel insecure. Everything starts in our mind. When I was younger, I really hated some parts of my body and wanted to change something all the time. I thought my body wasn't good enough at all even if I was a model, and I know I wasn't the only model thinking like that. But the only change needed was in my mind, to be able to accept myself fully and love my body. Yoga helped me in that because it´s all about how you feel on the inside, and not about how you look the outside. We are so critical of ourselves, but every one of us has many reasons to love their body exactly the way it is.

What positive effects have you seen in the community following the NYG project?

I love the people following NYG and how positive, honest, and supportive they all are to me and each other. I really want to create a community where everyone can be just the way they are in a natural way, and they can feel that they are good exactly like that. I want to bring together people who can also empower one another. People have seen and realised they really aren't the only ones struggling with self-acceptance and loving their body. It gives everyone a feeling of support. Absolutely the best part of this account is that many have said that in some way my account has helped them. Helped to accept and love their body, brought more confidence and courage, or they have found yoga. I'm also so happy and grateful that people have understood my message in the right way.

When do you feel most beautiful?

Hmm... actually when I´m dancing! I just enjoy life and how free my body can move in the rhythm of music. Or after helping someone. It's easy to like yourself when you try to be a good person and kind to everyone.

Any final advice for readers?

You don´t have to be perfect to be perfect. Be a friend to yourself and speak to yourself like you would speak to your best friend. Don´t belittle yourself too much, you are amazing and so much more than you think.
