Q&A with Dyan Tsiumis
At The Sweat Life, we really believe that there is no best of anything, only what works best for you — which goes to say, there is also no best body. Everyone has their own hang-ups about their body image, areas that they would like to improve and body parts they love to flaunt, and what you see is not always what you get. #Sweat Your Body is an ongoing feature, one that promises to be quite eye-opening. Thank you to the rockstars who are brave enough to #sweat their bodies for the world to see, and tell us what they love — and what they don’t
Dyan Tsiumis is a pint-sized powerhouse. What she lacks in height she makes up for in strength (those muscles!), attitude, and heart. She is always there to cheer you on through an intense workout, or get you back on track to the path you want to be taking. A Head Instructor at SWERVE and with her own private training business, it’s tough to imagine her pre-body transformation, at 220 lbs., but that was once Dyan’s reality. Body celebrations and hangups, the whole darn thing, we asked Dyan to #sweat her body.
How would you describe your body type?
Texts books define me as an endomorph. I put on muscle quickly, but I do the same with fat if I'm not mindful.
Why do you think you have your body?
My body is PERFECT for me. I'm 5'1'' so I've learned to command the attention of a room. I have thick legs and great muscular endurance to perform for long periods of time, but my best asset is my heart. I feel for my clients and students and that is my greatest power.
What do you do to maintain a healthy body image?
I practice what I preach. I am grateful every single day to wake up and have a body that supports me, that works for me. You can't give gratitude and complain about your chubby belly at the same time... it doesn't work like that. I write 10 gratitudes in a journal each night, and I meditate even if only for 5 minutes each morning (yes, even before my 5AMs).
What triggers you to stress the most about your body?
When I haven't been able to do yoga or if I've gone a day or two without meditating, I'm off. I'm a go go goer, and if I don't take time to breathe and create peace in my body, I'm of no use to anyone.
What does your workout routine consist of?
Two to three SWERVE classes a week (as a student, teaching is not MY workout), three days at Modo Yoga (a hot yoga practice in NYC), Barry's Bootcamp once or twice a week, and my own heavy weight lifting sessions three to four times a week... then whatever else I can fit in with #TheProgram, my workout crew.
How would you describe your eating habits?
Before I trained for a bikini competition I would have said "I eat clean"... now I would say very, very clean. I eat organically as much as possible (not inclusive of my Quest Bar cravings). My diet is filled with loads of egg whites, chicken, broccoli, spinach, and sweet potato. I supplement with a vegan protein shake if my workouts are extra intense on a given day. Don't get me wrong, when I need a night out, I turn it up with a tequila soda or (maybe and) a glass of Malbec.
What’s your favorite thing about your body?
I'm in tune with what my body needs physically and spiritually. I've learned the power of the mind is a magical thing. I use that gift to enhance my workouts, channeling that power and intensity and balancing it by meditating with my singing bowls.
What would you change?
I would love to be able to eat all the food AND have a rock hard body all the time. I know THAT's not gonna happen… so I really have to say I wouldn't change a thing. If I did, I wouldn't be me and that would kind of suck.
When did you feel the best about your body?
Duh, my fitness competition! I looked FIERCE. I was also training like a maniac for 7 months, and had a diet regime that I did not stray from for the same amount of time.
What outfit do you feel best in?
Pretty much anything I can dance in: high tops and an ‘80s off the shoulder sweatshirt, or a little black dress and heels. Dancing is really what makes me feel my best.
Are you comfortable naked?
Any last words?
