They say everything happens in threes. Well, I certainly hope that’s true when it comes to loss in the last year of my life — I lost my mother to ovarian cancer last February, one of my dear friends, Alex Niles, to gastric cancer just a few weeks later, and then my relationship with the man I thought I was going to marry come June. By summer’s end, I barely even recognized my life. While I continued to push forward and “show face” for The Sweat Life, my personal life was struggling and so was I. While I still often find myself bracing for the next (not other) shoe to drop, I also had to hold onto the hope that this was my THREE, and that things would eventually turn around and start looking up again. So I waited, and while everything wasn’t so intensely hard as it was in the middle of the storm, this massive life gift I felt I was owed from the universe after it ripped away so much from me, never came.
Then I had a realization, there would be no beautifully wrapped gift neatly tied with a bow dropped off by the universe at my doorstep. And even if said gift were to appear, it most certainly wouldn’t appear by me just sitting and waiting for this so-called gift I was so-called “owed.” Nope, life doesn’t work that way. I realized that if I wanted life to get better, I would have to actively make it better. However, when you are feeling so desperately lost and can’t seem to tell up from down, it’s often hard to even know where to begin.
After a few attempts of making grand plans for massive life overhauls, not only was I just still a bit lost and overwhelmed, but I realized these were not actual sustainable solutions. No, just like in any other area of my life, I had to create a roadmap, then I had to start with the first few steps of that map. When I approach anything in my life — if I look at a task as a whole, it can often be too overwhelming and simply cause me to put it off. However, if I break it down into steps, or a “roadmap” as I like to call it, and just focus on starting at the first few steps - suddenly, step by step, bite by bite, move by move, day by day, it’s not so overwhelming anymore.
So I created my road map for regaining control of my life, and have started chipping away at my first three steps:
- Travel at least once a month - check!
- Meditate every day - check!
- Ask for help more often - check!
And these three steps have truly made me feel more in control than I have in a long time. Since I run a health and wellness platform (and try my best to lead my healthiest life, just like you!), I meet a lot of people who are trying to get on a healthier path, and feel completely overwhelmed by where to even begin. So I thought I would share my little trick of “Three’s a charm” with all of you this week and offer three things in each category of health you can learn or take away and implement into your own routines, with the hopes that getting on a healthier path can be just a little less daunting!
With that in mind, our content this week does just that: trainers Gerren Liles from Equinox and Jackie Dragone from Flex Studios give us 3 moves each to change our bodies; nutritionist Keri Glassman shares 3 foods we can add to our plate; Bandier and SweatStyle give us 3 fitness fashion brands to help us feel good while we sweat; and some of the most notable founders and CEOs from all over the wellness space share the 3 things that they do every day that make them successful — something we can all benefit from!
I challenge each of you to pick your three changes you are going to implement in the next month and share them with us via social media with the hashtag #SL3sACHARM.
Can’t wait to see what you come up with!
Until next week,
Founder, CEO, and Host
