Through this journey of The Sweat Life and my journey with my mother, I've been afforded the chance to work with a lot of people either going through cancer journeys themselves, or through a journey to lead a healthier lifestyle. I have a go-to phrase I often use, that you have to “build your army.” So often, when it comes to our health, we are looking for that one silver bullet that’s going to do the trick. Unfortunately, no such bullet exists, nor is a bullet nearly enough ammunition to actually win in the war on health! You must build your army!
Your health army is everything from your fitness routine, to your nutritional plan (you know I hate the word "diet"), to your emotional and mental well-being, to your support system. While I truly believe these are the key components to building your healthy army and your healthy lifestyle, building your strongest army takes time, effort, trial and error, and a lot of support. We are all individuals and we need to approach our healthy lifestyle in the way that works best for each of us, but we ALL know that getting healthy and staying healthy is not always easy. So why do it alone?! I am a strong advocate for having support when it comes to your health, and this — I like to call it your “tribe” — is one of the key components to your health army.
Your tribe can be made up of your doctors, nutritionists, healers, teachers, and trainers. Your tribe should also include your friends, your family, and your community. Lastly, your tribe should consist of people who are like-minded when it comes to health, and will only encourage you, inspire you, and support you to lead your healthiest life. We live in a very exciting time when health, wellness, and fitness are becoming “cool,” and being healthy is the new “it” thing. While I am not an advocate for getting healthy for the sake of being on-trend, I think it’s amazing that one no longer needs to feel like the outlier when embarking on a healthy journey, as this community is stronger than ever — not to mention full of the coolest and most kickass people I know!
Our featured studio this week, Y7 Yoga, is one of the clear leaders in making health cool again. They have taken the “traditional” out of the yoga practice, set it to hip hop music, put the practice in a dark candlelit room with no mirrors, and heated that room with infrared heat. Additionally, they have an amazing community, who they like to call, “A tribe called sweat.” (Which we are completely stealing for our theme this week!) Y7 has it right: This is exactly what the fitness community has become — a tribe called sweat— and what a cool tribe it is.
Our contributors this week all represent different aspects of our health army, our tribe. Y7 Yoga founder Sarah Levey tells us why hip hop unites us all; nationally-known nutritionist Keri Glassman explains how we can change our mindset in the kitchen and why you may want to go to Nutrition School yourself; the hip lady-bosses from HigherDOSE (creators of Y7 Yoga’s infrared panels) talk about the benefits of infrared and why they are chasing the “natural high;” and superstar Barry’s Bootcamp trainer Matty Maggiacomo shows us what a Day in the Sweat Life, with his tribe, is like for him.
Our tribe is our most valuable resource, cheering us on, building us up, celebrating our successes and toasting to the good riddance of our defeats. We are so proud to be a part of your tribe, and we are always here if you need us.
Until next week,
